Playground Improvement

Sponsor a Playground Element
Did you know you can personally take the reins and lead the improvement of our outdoor space at The Mayapple School by sponsoring a specific playground element? Here’s how to become a sponsor:

1. Choose a specific playground element from the list below that you want to see improved or made.
2. Create a design plan for your playground element (written, drawn, or from photographs), as well as a proposed budget.
3. After you get the plan approved by The Mayapple School staff, you can get to work! You will be responsible for shopping for needed materials (keep all receipts), recruiting helpers, and setting a work day that is available on the NCAC calendar. You don’t need to do all of the work yourself, but being a sponsor means leading the project!
4. When you’re done, we’ll add your name to our website and it will also go on signage for our playground this summer! You’ll also get total bragging rights as everyone ooo’s and ahh’s over just how cool you made your project.

Note: We have a good number of volunteers coming to help us on March 9th, 2017 from Holy Cross; plan your project now to take advantage of these wonderful helpers!
Interested in a certain project but not sure what the details might be? Come talk with me (Melissa West) any day at school. Not a parent, but want your community group or church group to join in? Make an appointment to talk about the project and view the site (e-mail melissa@mayapple.org or call (540) 818 – 6128).

Just waiting

Project: Fence

Now: The fence has been purchased and is at the site of The Mayapple School.

Ideas for Improvement: We need someone to organize a work day, as well as the borrowing of enough shovels and post hole diggers for the work day. Our sponsor will need to be present and organize workers on the work day. Our sponsor will also ensure all needed materials are available and see the project through to completion.

from this…

…to this (inspiration only!)

Project: Mud Pie Kitchen
Now: This project would be for our creek area outdoor space. Currently we have a sink waiting to find a home in this project.
Ideas: The sponsor for this project would design and create a mud pie kitchen that is free standing and potentially made out of more than one piece, so that the kitchen parts would be movable. (We need to “move out” of our creek area outdoor space each summer for The Newport Agricultural Fair to use in August.)
Sponsor: Melissa and Jake Powell (Logan’s Parents)
Projected Date of Completion: COMPLETED

Inspiration!

Project: Loose Parts
Now: A selection of sticks, logs, stones, shells, and log rounds are available in our creek outdoor space.
Ideas: The Loose Parts Prince and Princess would be in charge of bringing in a larger variety of loose parts and providing for their organization and accessibility. Adding bricks, spools, more log rounds, crates, etc would be attractive to children. All parts of the loose parts area must be temporary fixtures. (We need to “move out” of our creek area outdoor space each summer for The Newport Agricultural Fair to use in August.) These members of royalty should also commit to maintenance of the loose parts area 1x per month for the remainder of the school year.
Funds Available: A small amount of funds could be made available; most items will need to be “found” items.

Project: Garden Beds
Now: We have a handful of garden beds for school gardening projects, some of which are not yet filled with soil.
Ideas: The sponsor of this project would source compost or topsoil to fill the remainder of the garden beds, transport the soil, and fill the beds. Plants do not need to be sourced. He/she is also invited to be present 1 -2 x per month at the school to help with gardening projects.
Funds Available: No
Sponsor: Steve and Allison LePera (Alexandra’s Parents)
Projected Date of Completion: COMPLETED

Project: Tool Bench
Now: not present
Ideas: I’d love to start a small woodworking area for preschoolers to begin to learn the basics of wood working with hand tools such as a hand drill and hammer and nails. This area should be sized appropriately for preschoolers and have room for one or two students to work on a project. The table will be in our creek play area and should be free standing.
